Is the Bible true?

Is the Bible true? Or is it just a collection of myths and fables? Is it God’s word – as Christians believe; or was it written by the church to brainwash people into believing certain facts about Jesus Christ? These are vital questions. If the Bible is not true then Christians have no basis for their beliefs, and there is no sure way of knowing the truth about life, death and the hereafter.

The Bible tells us that, “All Scripture is given by inspiration of God” (2 Timothy 3v16). It is not the product of man’s imagination. The Bible was written by men who were especially chosen and instructed by God to record what he revealed to them. There are actually many evidences that what they wrote really is – GOD’S WORD.

One convincing proof that the Bible is true is that it accurately predicts future events. Weather forecasters, doctors, politicians and others seek to predict what is going to happen, but the only one who can foretell the future with absolute accuracy is God. Men may guess, but God knows. “Known to God from eternity are all his works” (Acts 15v18).

Consider, for example, what the Bible says about Jesus Christ. Hundreds of years before he was born the Bible gave details about his birth, life, death and resurrection. The first part of the Bible (the Old Testament) predicted that Jesus would be born in Bethlehem; that he would perform miracles; that he would be betrayed for thirty pieces of silver and be rejected by his own people. It foretold that Jesus would be beaten and spat upon; that he would be crucified and then buried in a rich man’s tomb. The Bible also predicted that he would rise from the dead and ascend back into heaven.

All of these predictions and many more were fulfilled. Was this all just coincidence? If this was merely guesswork the probability of all these events occurring exactly as predicted is millions to one. Only an eternal, all-knowing God could reveal the future with any accuracy. Only God can write history in advance.

The evidence for the reliability of the Bible is clear and so we must take its message very seriously. The Bible not only predicts the coming of Jesus into the world, but it also explains why he came. It tells us, “All have sinned and fallen short of the glory of God” (Romans 3v23). We have all done wrong (sinned) before God, who sees and knows everything. These wrongdoings have broken our relationship with God our Creator who is holy and just. To deal with our sin and restore that relationship is the reason Jesus came from heaven to earth. “Christ Jesus came into the world to save sinners” (1 Timothy 1v5).

The Bible tells us that God loved us and sent his Son to die for us. “For God so loved the world that He gave His only begotten Son, that whoever believes in Him should not perish but have everlasting life” (John 3v16). When Jesus died on the cross he suffered the punishment that our sins deserve, so that we could be forgiven and brought back into a right relationship with God. If you sincerely repent of your sin and receive the Lord Jesus as your personal Saviour, you will have peace with God and be ready for heaven.

God’s word is true. It is totally reliable.
Believe it and get right with God today!
