Nothing but Stress

In this fast moving and volatile world in which we live stress has become a negative part of everyday life. Stress has been defined as the ‘adverse reaction people have to excessive pressure or other types of demand placed upon them’. Approximately 5,000,000 people in the UK report feeling ‘very’ or ‘extremely’ stressed by their work. A total of 12.8 million work days were lost to stress in 2004/5. Without doubt, stress has a major impact on the well-being of society.

The right perspective
The Bible teaches us that in stressful times we should try to get our lives into perspective. Whether our stress is self-imposed or imposed upon us, the same principle applies. The Lord Jesus asked the question, ‘For what shall it profit a man if he shall gain the whole world and lose his own soul?’ (Mark 8 v 36)
This is a challenging reality for us. What is the big issue in life amidst the stressful pressures to succeed or survive in a situation? Our lives here on earth in time are but a short journey, just a step into eternity! When we put this eternal spotlight on our lives we begin to get the concerns of time into perspective. The pressures, possessions and positions in this world are of limited duration, whereas our soul is that eternal part of our being which is destined either for Heaven or hell.

Be prepared
The big issue for us is to be prepared and ready to take the inevitable step that all humanity has to take into eternity. How may we be ready? To be ready we must confess our sins to God and turn from our sinful ways in repentance, putting our trust in Jesus Christ as our personal Saviour. Please remember he has died upon the cross to bear the punishment from God because of sin for all those who put their trust in him. Then we must live the remainder of our lives following Jesus Christ Who rose from the dead as the Lord of our life. Only then can we look forward with certainty to heaven as our final destination.

So the big issue is…
…not success or survival in a stressful world but salvation for time and eternity. A person who is saved through Jesus Christ the Lord can look forward to an eternal future in Heaven which will be stress-free and perfectly fulfilling. However, the Bible warns us that the alternative destination for those who do not trust in the Lord is a stress-full eternity in hell.
