So that’s what Christmas means…

Excuse me asking this, but – where are you going?  Does anyone care?  Two strange questions you may think.  Here’s a third: do you care?  No one would be so stupid as to get on a bus without first checking where it was going; yet in life most of us do just that; we travel through life without giving any thought or consideration to our destiny.

Each year we plan our Christmas: the presents we buy, visiting relatives, the tree, the turkey, sending or not sending cards – it’s all planned.  The first Christmas, the birth of the Lord Jesus Christ was planned too; but with much more love care and thought.

CHRISTMAS MEANS: THERE IS A PLAN

The Bible fully predicted the birth, life, crucifixion, death and resurrection of the Lord Jesus Christ, hundreds of years before they happened. Look at these words spoken before the Lord’s birth, recorded in Matthew’s gospel.

“You shall call His name JESUS (which means saviour) for He shall save His people from their sins.” Ch.1:21

Yes, this verse tells us quite plainly that Christmas was planned, but also:-

CHRISTMAS MEANS: WE ARE ALL LOST

A sticker was once seen on a car which read “Don’t follow me – I’m lost”.  Whilst that may be amusing on a car, how terrible to realise that each one of us is naturally in this condition.  Proverbs Ch.14 v.12 says – “There is a way that seems right to a man, but the end is the way of death.”

In what way are we lost?  The Bible says that by nature we are sinners, and that our thoughts and actions continually prove this.  God, who is holy and pure sees us as unclean.  God says that at best our lives are like a pile of filthy rags, fit only to be burned.  It is in this way that we are lost.

CHRISTMAS MEANS: ALL IS NOT LOST

“Where are you going?” is a very serious question; one which we must all ask ourselves.

God says “He will save His people from their sins.”  This is exactly what has happened.  When Christ lived on earth His life, unlike ours, was fully pleasing to God, and when He died on the cross He was being punished, not for His own sins, but for the sins of all those who would believe on him.  To prove that this was acceptable, God raised Jesus from the dead three days later.

“God made Him to be sin who knew no sin, so that we might become the righteousness of God.”  2 Corinthians Ch.5 v.21.

CHRISTMAS MEANS: WE ARE IN DEBT

We can never pay the price of our sin: Christ could and did.  His death and punishment can become ours, and then His perfect life can be reckoned to us.  So we must repent of our sin: that is, we must turn from it and ask God to save us, making us one of his people.

Again we ask – where are you gong?  Does anyone care?  Yes, someone does – God!!

“For God so loved the world that He gave His only begotten son, that whosoever believes in Him, SHOULD NOT PERISH, BUT HAVE EVERLASTING LIFE.” John Ch.3 v.16.

God cared enough to send the Lord Jesus Christ, so we must ask, will you care enough about your own soul to respond to the love of God – Believe in Christ and “Flee from the wrath to come”.

Christmas is a time of joy and happiness but remember . . .

CHRISTMAS MEANS: THINGS WILL CHANGE

There is a time coming when the joy of Christmas will, for some, turn into great sorrow and anguish.  There is a day coming when there will be no time left to repent and receive.  Only those who have believed in Christ will be saved; for them it will be the greatest day ever.  But all those who are not His people will be lost forever with no further opportunity to be saved.

CHRISTMAS MEANS: THERE MUST BE A RESPONSE

How awful that day will be if you have never taken up God’s wonderful offer of salvation.  How terrible to see the chance of becoming one of Christ’s people gone completely.

We ask you again – Do you care where you are going?  Will you respond to the great love of God?  Admit that you are lost, turn from your sin asking God for forgiveness, ask him to save you and make you one of His people.

“YOU SHALL CALL HIS NAME JESUS, FOR HE WILL SAVE HIS PEOPLE FROM THEIR SINS.”
